Michael Jacobson, MD, Has Been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who’s Who Biographical Registry

July 8, 2020/in News /by lizzi

Dr. Jacobson Cofounded Georgia Retina, P.C. and Has Navigated It into One of the Most Successful, Prestigious Retinal Practices in the United States.

Michael Jacobson, MD, has been inducted into Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Jacobson is renowned as an ophthalmologist/retinal specialist with more than 35 years of dedicated service to his patients as well as translational research in his specialty. He attended Dartmouth College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry in 1978. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut in 1982. He chose ophthalmology because in medical school, he was having trouble working the ophthalmoscope and was determined to learn to do so. He took an ophthalmology rotation and soon developed proficiency with the device.  When this breakthrough occurred, and he was able to see properly into the eye, he commented “It was like a whole new world…” and at that moment he discovered the beauty of ophthalmology.

From 1982 to 1983, Dr. Jacobson worked as a resident in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU School of Medicine).  He worked as a staff physician at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital from 1983 to 1984. Then, Dr. Jacobson completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 1984 to 1987.

From 1987 to 1989, Dr. Jacobson was active as a fellow in medical retina, retinal, and vitreous surgery at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary (University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System). In 1989, he joined Retina and Vitreous Associates in Minneapolis, MN and was invited to be clinical assistant professor at the University of Minnesota.  He then was recruited to Atlanta where he was provided retinal care in private practice and was invited to be Clinical Assistant Professor at Emory University from 1993 to 1996. In 1995, Dr. Jacobson recognized that Atlanta and North Georgia needed a top flight retina group practice and established Georgia Retina P.C., to accomplish that mission.  It has grown to 12 offices and 17 physicians.  He has been on its executive council since its inception, holding various executive positions until appointed president in 2017. He has been chosen by his peers as a Top Doctor every year since 2011.

A frequent contributor to research studies, textbooks and medical journals, Dr. Jacobson is the author of the chapter “The Impact of Pregnancy on Ophthalmic Surgery” for “Non-Obstetric Surgery During Pregnancy: A Comprehensive Guide” in 2018. An invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences and symposia, he was notably presented with a Harvard Book Award in 1973.  Dr. Jacobson is a member of the Atlanta Ophthalmology Association, the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, the Medical Association of Georgia, the American Association of Retinal Specialists (formerly Vitreous Society).  He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a former member of the Minneapolis Ophthalmological Society, Sigma Xi, and the American Medical Association.  Since 2017, he has been a physician board member of EyeSouth Partners, a dynamic organization that he is helping to build a best-in-class network of leading Eye practices throughout the South.  This organization is reshaping how retinal specialists, ophthalmologists and optometrists practice collectively together and yet independently.
