Biography

Dr. Sean Koh is a board-certified ophthalmologist who has received numerous awards. He graduated with highest honors from the State University of New York at Stony Brook before attending the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. During medical school, he was elected to the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed an internal medicine internship at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y., and an ophthalmology residency at the Boston University Medical Center. He completed a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School, one of the premier fellowship programs in the nation. During his fellowship, he was awarded the Joint Clinical Research Center Award from the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Koh’s initial interest in ophthalmology arose during his surgery clerkship rotation. He was able to observe a cataract extraction at an affiliate hospital, and found himself extremely attracted to the microscopic nature of ophthalmic surgery. During his ensuing ophthalmology rotations, Dr. Koh discovered the uniqueness of the specialty — the mixture of medicine and surgery in practice, the treatment of all age groups, the challenge of microscopic techniques, the precision of diagnostic ability, and the continuity of patients’ relationships with ophthalmologists — all of which strongly appealed to him.

Dr. Koh has been an active participant in numerous research studies, has written both articles and chapters, and has also taught medical students and ophthalmology residents. Apart from research and continuing education, Dr. Koh notes that the most rewarding thing about his profession is being able to save people’s vision and make a lasting impact on their lives. If Dr. Koh had not become a doctor, he said he probably would have been a physicist.

Dr. Koh was born in Seoul, South Korea. He is an active member of the Korean Church of Atlanta UMC where he volunteers at health seminars to help local residents better understand complex medical issues about their eyes. In addition, he also is a regular guest on Atlanta Radio Korea 1080-AM where he takes questions in Korean about eye-care issues. When he is not helping patients in the Atlanta area with their vision, Dr. Koh is either traveling with his wife and two daughters or playing golf.
