Biography
Dr. Mukkamala grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia where his parents are both educators. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering with minors in Mathematics and Business while graduating Magna Cum Laude and with University Honors. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Mukkamala went on to complete his ophthalmology residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in New York, New York.
Dr. Mukkamala continued his training as a vitreo-retinal fellow at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he was awarded the B. Dobli Srinivasan Award for Best Clinical Research. During his fellowship, he was involved in the training of ophthalmology residents at Columbia University, New York University, Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Institute, and Bellevue Hospital.
Dr. Mukkamala chose to become a physician because it allows him “to connect with people every day bringing a ray of joy and hope to their lives.” He enjoys spending time with his patients and enjoys explaining to them in detail about their eye conditions and their treatment options. He chose vitreo-retinal surgery as a specialty because it offers him the ability to perform procedures that require a high level of precision, something that makes his detail oriented personality come in handy. As a biomedical engineer, Dr. Mukkamala appreciates using cutting edge technology to visualize, diagnose, and treat retinal diseases. When asked about the most rewarding aspect of his career, Dr. Mukkamala said that in addition to helping individuals and their family members combat sight-threatening conditions, he enjoys interacting with his hard working and caring staff and building relationships with the other eye care providers in the community. Dr. Mukkamala re-established the Atlanta Ophthalmological Society to foster a collegial atmosphere amongst the Atlanta Ophthalmological community
Dr. Mukkamala has written a chapter on Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and published over 15 scientific manuscripts in peer reviewed journals such as Retina, Ophthalmology, Survey of Ophthalmology, and Archives of Ophthalmology. He has also been involved in many clinical trials and has trained with international leaders in both surgical and medical care of retinal diseases. Because he enjoys teaching his patients, staff, and peers, Dr. Mukkamala said he would have probably become a professor like his father and grandfather if he were not a doctor.
When he has time off, Dr. Mukkamala enjoys exercising and staying physically fit. He is married to his loving wife who works at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Together, they have an energetic and very talkative daughter. Dr. Mukkamala enjoys traveling and exploring local restaurants.
